Why People avoid Weight Training?

 

Weight training or training with dumbbell and barbells is important but still, most of the people going gyms prefer cardio over weights. It is generally because the concept of weight training or why it is important is still not very clear to most. Some people are still holding to the thought that they might get huge, big and muscular in few days if they start lifting weights. Others avoid weight training because walking on a treadmill while listening to the favorite music or watching a good movie on the mobile is far more luxurious than struggling with dumbbells and barbells.

In metro cities, one can often find people talking about this, “I don’t want to train with weights; I just want to lose fat and want to make my abs visible. So I would like to do only cardio and abs”. This sentence not only shows how the concept of fitness is still so unclear among the most educated sector of society, but also displays how people are afraid of strength training.

There are many other such beliefs which contribute to this kind of thinking.

 

Why people are not interested in weight training?

Reason number 1            –Lifting heavy weights will make them huge.weight-training

This is the most common myth among many regular gym goers. They don’t want to get huge and think that they can train with light weights and make little muscles of their chest arms and abs.

Reason number 2            –Do not want to make any extra useless effort

Especially when they don’t want any popping muscles and the target is just to lose fat some people consider lifting weights an unnecessary job. For such a target they think only running on the treadmill, cycling, cross trainer or aerobics can help them in the best way.

It has been found that some people consider the weight training is meant for bodybuilders only.

Reason number 4            – Aerobics is better than weight training

People still believe that they can burn too many calories while performing aerobic exercises, dance classes, Zumba, yoga and all such group classes which they think is better than weight training and they can lose weight faster and get in better shape faster.

Reason number 5            – They don’t sweat a lot while performing weight training

The more you sweat, the more you burn. This sentence has been developed by many gym goers. The connection between sweat and fat loss has no direct relation and sweating has never been a unit to measure fat loss, but this myth still circulates among people that sweating more means more fat loss.

Reason number 6            – Want to lose belly fat so have to work on it only

Inspite of hundreds and thousands of articles, videos, talk shows on television and internet, still many people believe that spot-reduction is possible and one can reduce fat from the belly area by doing abs. Anyone who still believes that by doing exercises for abs he/she can lose fat from that particular area, is in a great danger.  Not only one will waste his/her time and money in the gym but also get sick mentally because even after doing hundreds of repetitions one will not find any change, ultimately he/she would leave the gym for ever or might join a group class like dancing, Zumba, aerobics etc.

Reason number 7            – Fear of injury

Some people have been very skeptical towards weight training or resistant training because they think it might hurt them. They have their own stories about how someone use to go to gym and did lots of weight training but later lost his back and now he is on bed for ever. Such stories have no real base but the influence is too strong.

Reason number 8            – Lost weight will come back later

If someone reading this is thinking that the weight loss which happens after weight training might come back, he/she is thinking exactly opposite. It is cardio and aerobic which does this to a person. People who lose weight by running or by doing aerobic activities generally complain that they gain the weight back in days which they lost in months. With weight training, the lost fat doesn’t come back if proper diet is maintained. In fact one can enjoy every type of food and cuisine if his/her weight training is going well.

Even if 1000 people stand together and say “Weight training is ineffective” one shouldn’t believe their words just because they have majority and the voice is louder. Check for yourself, spend time doing it, enjoy doing it, study more about it, and learn the different perspectives of weight training before you come to any conclusion.

If there are people who criticize weight training or resistance training, there are others who have completely changed themselves, transformed their lives by doing weight training. One has to decide how to move further, improve with weight training or keep doing cardio and aerobics with a dream to get fit someday.
